События в картине будут разворачиваться в Шанхае двумя параллельными линиями — в 1960-е и 1970-е во времена Культурной революции и с 1980-х до начала нового века. Режиссёр собирается погрузиться в ежедневный быт простых горожан, управляя сотней персонажей, из которых выделит несколько главных, и представит два портрета Шанхая — старого города и модернизированного мегаполиса, каким он является сегодня.
Ранее сообщалось, что Вонг Кар-Вай занят работой над романтической драмой «Паромщик», но оказалось, что в том проекте он участвует на правах сценариста.
