Description:
Wu Hai-Yan's (Connie Chan) mother died young, and her father drank heavily until one day a heart attack took him as well. Hai-Yan leaves Macau for Hong Kong to seek out her wet nurse, who passes her off as her own daughter and installs her in the Chen household, where she works as a servant. On her very first day Hai-Yan sees the Chens' teenage daughter Chen Zhen-Zhu (Nancy Sit) tormenting the family tutor and shoving the poor man into the swimming pool. Hai-Yan steps in to help him, which earns Zhen-Zhu's resentment, and the girl secretly puts a snake in Hai-Yan's bed. Show more But Hai-Yan grabs the snake and dashes it dead against the floor. Zhen-Zhu is won over, and on learning that Hai-Yan graduated from a teachers' college, she immediately invites her to be her own tutor.
The Chens' eldest son, Zi-Ying (Lui Kei), who studies in Singapore, brings several classmates home for the summer holidays. Among them is Li Yue-Hua (Yip Ching), daughter of a man on whom Zi-Ying's father Chen Han-Zhang depends in business. She has feelings for Zi-Ying, but he keeps her at arm's length. The first time he meets Hai-Yan, Zi-Ying leaves Yue-Hua stranded, and in a fury she wants to leave at once; only everyone's persuasion keeps her there. The next day, in a water fight, Hai-Yan, who has never played such a game, wins a complete victory. That evening at a dance a butterfly flies in, and led by the mischievous Zhen-Zhu everyone sets off to catch it. The gardener takes a bad fall, and Hai-Yan and Zi-Ying take him to the hospital, which displeases Yue-Hua, while Zi-Ying arranges with Hai-Yan to visit the gardener's home together the next day.
The next day Yue-Hua cannot find Zi-Ying and Hai-Yan, and she interrogates Zhen-Zhu, one moment bribing her, the next threatening her, while Father Chen tries both coaxing and pressure. Zhen-Zhu deliberately exaggerates everything, and Yue-Hua is beside herself with rage. Meanwhile Zi-Ying and Hai-Yan wander among the hills and waters, and their feelings grow closer still. In her anger Yue-Hua plots to harm Hai-Yan, but Zhen-Zhu sees through every scheme. Zi-Ying and Hai-Yan go to the gardener's house, only to find he has already discharged himself from the hospital. His son Ming-Sheng (Cheung Ching) is a childhood friend of Zi-Ying, and he welcomes Zi-Ying and Hai-Yan warmly, to his wife's great displeasure. Just then Zhen-Zhu arrives to say that Yue-Hua is in a rage and demands the two of them return.
Yue-Hua claims her perfume has been stolen, but Zhen-Zhu "finds" it in her own luggage. Her plot to frame Hai-Yan fails, and in a fit of shame and anger she returns to Singapore to complain. Hai-Yan can no longer stay in the Chen house, so she moves into the empty house of Ming-Sheng's family, and he finds her a job teaching at a primary school.
Yue-Hua comes back to Hong Kong with her father. Chen Han-Zhang demands that Zi-Ying apologize to Yue-Hua, but Zi-Ying finally has it out with her. Talking to herself alone, Hai-Yan accidentally tweaks Ming-Sheng's ear, and afterward he takes her to the school for an interview; Ming-Sheng's wife sees it all. The moment Zi-Ying arrives, she starts poisoning his mind against her husband. Zi-Ying is half doubtful at first, but that night a storm breaks, and Hai-Yan falls while patching the roof. When Zi-Ying rushes over at the news, he finds Ming-Sheng feeding her medicine, believes his wife's words, and brawls with Ming-Sheng. Hai-Yan's explanations are useless, and she leaves in sorrow. By the time Zi-Ying learns the truth, Hai-Yan has vanished. He searches everywhere without finding her, and, caught off guard, is hit by a car and taken to the hospital. Zhen-Zhu drags Hai-Yan to visit him, and brother and sister hatch a plan: Zi-Ying pretends to be on the verge of death, and at last Hai-Yan's heart softens. The two make up, and the film ends with their wedding.
