Deng Huo Lan Shan 灯火阑珊

Description:

Granny Chan Kiu (Chan Lap-Ban) is at odds with her daughter-in-law (Siu Yam-Yam) and, ignoring her son's (Albert Cheung Miu-Hau) pleas, insists on moving out for a few days. Putting on a carefree front though she has nowhere to go, she wanders to the foot of a footbridge, where a street sleeper named Ah Si (Wong Man) teaches her to spend the night at a nearby shelter for the homeless. To put her son Sai B (Dicky Cheung Wai-Kin) through university, Niu Gu-Niang (Hua Wa) takes a job at the shelter, and on her first night shift she runs into the sharp-tongued Chan Kiu. Chan Kiu gets Niu Gu-Niang scolded by the supervisor (Yu Miu-Lin), but the generous Niu Gu-Niang bears her no grudge. Chan Kiu returns to the footbridge and becomes fast friends with Ah Si, Silly Chicken (Hui Siu-Ying) and the other sleepers. The damp, mosquito-ridden bridge foot drives her back to the shelter, where her cheerful, forthright nature wins her friends throughout the dormitory. On the day of a typhoon, her son and daughter-in-law come in person to urge her home, and Chan Kiu finally agrees. Some time later, Chan Kiu goes to visit Ah Si and her other old friends, but not a single sleeper remains beneath the footbridge.
