Wu Zhe Ai Wu 舞者爱舞

Description:

Shi, the troupe leader (played by Hoh Ho-Chuen), is a man obsessed with dance. After his family moves to Hong Kong, he and a group of mainland dancers form a Chinese folk dance troupe and win the support of the Urban Council for their performances. Troupe member Ye Mei (played by Chow On-Ling) is unhappy with the low performance fees Shi pays out, and the other members, who all work part-time jobs and struggle to get by, urge her to negotiate with him for a raise. Shi insists that dancers should devote themselves to art, not business. The members demand that he take the matter up with the Urban Council and insist that even a last-minute cancellation should still be paid at half rate. Shi replies that he has raised the issue many times without any improvement, and that in all the years they have performed, the fees from the Urban Council have never increased. Fed up, Ye Mei leads the others out of the troupe. Yet just before the performance, Ye Mei, who loves dance too much to stay away, brings the dancers back to perform. Life, however, is relentless, and in the end Ye Mei decides to leave the stage for good. Troupe member Zhou Baichuan (played by Wong Wai) proposes that Shi go into partnership with him in the costume jewelry business. But the goods turn out to be shoddy and cannot be resold, and the unscrupulous Hong Kong manufacturer refuses to take them back. Zhou Baichuan is left drowning in debt, and two dancer families sink into hardship. The two men grit their teeth and go to a nightclub to sign a contract for the troupe. However hard life gets, they have no choice but to struggle on.
