The theft and destruction of the tomb became public knowledge, and Sun Dian-Ying, thrown into a panic, was desperate to sell off the treasures. Zhu Shou-Guang got wind of this and immediately ordered detective captain Liu Qing-Lin to abduct Zhang Hou-Qi at the Qingdao docks. When Sun Dian-Ying learned in alarm that the jewels had been intercepted, fearing the incriminating evidence would fall into someone else's hands, he sent his pistol company to seize Zhang Hou-Qi back. Show more On the way, the pistol company and the detectives exchanged gunfire; Zhang Hou-Qi was killed in the hail of bullets, and the jewels were recovered by the pistol company. Liu Qing-Lin, gravely wounded, fled back to the Pingjin headquarters, where Zhu Shou-Guang, afraid of leaks, had him secretly executed.
The situation kept escalating. Sun Dian-Ying, while sending trusted men out in all directions to step up his maneuvers, authorized Tan Wen-Jiang to hold a press conference in Beiping, falsely claiming that the tomb robbery had been the work of bandits, the better to deceive the world and divert suspicion. To retaliate against Sun Dian-Ying, Zhu Shou-Guang secretly had Tan Wen-Jiang captured alive and subjected him to cruel torture to force him to reveal where the jewels were. Xu Yuan-Quan, commander of the Sixth Army Group, was unwilling to get dragged into the mess Sun Dian-Ying had made; after Sun Dian-Ying begged him again and again for help, he had no choice but to personally demand Tan Wen-Jiang's release from Zhu Shou-Guang, while also sending troops to disrupt Pingjin.
