Description:
Song Lian (Gong Li), only half a year into university, is forced by her money-grubbing mother into marriage in the Chen household, becoming the master's fourth concubine. The Chen mansion has an old custom: at dusk the concubines must stand before their rooms and wait for the servants to bring the big red lantern that means the master will favor them that night.
At first, as the "new" wife, Song Lian enjoys the master's greatest favor, but for this very reason the other three concubines, especially the second concubine (Cao Cui-Fen) who hides a knife behind her smile, make her life miserable. Show more Inexperienced in the ways of the world, rebellious and proud by nature, Song Lian is eager to hold her own and schemes her way back into the master's favor, but her plan is seen through, and she is ultimately defeated by the second concubine, leading to tragedy. And though the fate of the third concubine (He Sai-Fei) is utterly different from Song Lian's, it arrives at the same end by another road — there is no escaping destiny.

Жизнь женщины в жестком патриархальном обществе, где она вынуждена интриговать, чтобы заслужить больше места под Солнцем среди жен-соперниц. Прям дворцовые интриги, только рангом пониже. Стоит выделить красивые костюмы, декорации, детализацию, цветопередачу, а также, визуально, обычай в виде зажигания красных фонарей у той из жен, которую посетит муж. Можно было бы посочувствовать служанке (Кун Линь), мечтающей о красных фонарях, Четвертой жены Сунлян (Гун Ли), но, пожалуй, они все тутта, в какой то степени, являются стервами). Любителям экшна фильм может показаться скучным, так как повествование происходит в одном месте.
