On November 2, the organisers of the 63rd Golden Horse Awards unveiled the promotional short Jianghu Love Affairs (江湖情事). It was directed by Yin Chen-Hao, who made the Taiwanese romantic drama Man in Love. Bringing together ten stars, the short turns an advertisement for the ceremony into a playful exploration of crime-film imagery.
The cast includes Vivian Sung Yun-Hua, Roy Chiu Tse, Greg Hsu Kuang-Han, Kwai Lun-Mei, Lee Kang-Sheng, Peter Tseng Jing-Hua, Gingle Wang Jing and Karena Lam Ka-Yan. Their characters are connected by love, rivalry and the pursuit of a mysterious object. The director leaves viewers to decide what drives them: an award, success or something else.
Viewers can look for references to A Better Tomorrow, Infernal Affairs and Election. These are not sequels to the famous films: the director uses familiar motifs to create his own story about the allure of cinema.
A photo series made with VOGUE Taiwan was unveiled at the same time. The magazine’s team contributed styling, photography and interviews; the material will also appear in its November issue. The Golden Horse ceremony itself takes place on November 22.
