In 1978, twenty-year-old Peng Jin-Xi (Qiao Shan) from Xingcheng in Liaoning is reported for "speculation" by his romantic rival Qin Sheng, thrown into prison and stripped of his chance to attend university. After his release, Peng Jin-Xi starts making and selling swim trunks on his own. His girlfriend Luo Hong (Yang Zi-Shan) stands by him through it all, and after overcoming countless hardships the two marry. Peng Jin-Xi becomes the first "ten-thousand-yuan household" in the area. In the early 1980s, as policy loosens, his distant relative Jia Wei-Min and others follow Peng Jin-Xi's lead, setting up workshops to make swimwear and launching a price war against him. Show more The Pengs give as good as they get, shoring up the local market while uniting their fellow tradesmen, and Peng Jin-Xi leads the way in taking "Xingcheng swimwear" nationwide. In the 1990s, caught between Qin Sheng's revenge and market restructuring, Peng Jin-Xi hits rock bottom. Ever optimistic, he relies on his exceptional wits, and after many ups and downs finds a breakthrough, building a proper factory and an independent brand and successfully breaking out. The Pengs then lead "Xingcheng swimwear" riding the wind and waves to become the world's largest swimwear production base: today, one in every four swimsuits in the world is made by the people of Xingcheng.
