On this day the heavens shed countless tears; only this man could strengthen the navy's might. How the Beiyang Fleet, once awe-inspiring to the world, was built and became the first in Asia, how it met its end in the sea and thus came to ruin. A true re-creation of the great bloody war between China and Japan, the Lushun Massacre, the war in Pyongyang, Korea, the Liaodong campaign, the Battle of Pungdo, the Battle of the Yellow Sea, and the great battle at Weihai in Shandong.
In 1855, the naval minister Shen Bao-Zhen founded the Fuzhou Naval Academy, which trained the first class of young naval officers who went on to become commanders of the Fujian Fleet and the Beiyang Fleet. Show more
On March 31, 1877, some of these outstanding naval officers went to study at the British Royal Naval College, bearing the heavy expectations placed on them by the nation. Meanwhile, Japan after the Meiji Restoration hastened to purchase and build warships and rapidly develop its navy; the officers it sent also studied in Britain and became their future opponents. In 1874, Japan, using the killing of Ryukyu fishermen as a pretext, shelled Taiwan and landed troops.
At 13:50 on August 23, 1884, the Battle of Majiang broke out; in 1888 the world-shaking Beiyang Fleet was formally established, with two large ironclads, eight cruisers, six gunboats, sixteen torpedo boats, five training ships... 56 vessels in all, with more than 4,000 officers and men.
In 1894 the Sino-Japanese War in Korea broke out. At 7:45 on July 25, the Japanese navy suddenly attacked the Beiyang Fleet at Pungdo in the mouth of the Yalu River. The Japanese army, escorted by the fleet, forcibly landed in Korea and fiercely attacked the Qing troops stationed in Pyongyang. At 12:50 on September 17, in the waters of Dadonggou in the Yellow Sea, the Beiyang Fleet and the Japanese Combined Fleet fought the first great sea battle in human history between steam-powered ironclad fleets. On November 6 the Japanese army took Jinzhou. On November 7, the Empress Dowager Cixi's 60th birthday, an edict ordered three days of opera performances; on the same day the Japanese took Dalian and began their advance on Lushun. From the 22nd to the 25th, the Japanese 1st Division commanded by divisional commander Yamaji Motoshi began a four-day massacre that shocked the world: 20,000 Chinese were slaughtered, and in all of Lushun only 36 Chinese survived, left by the Japanese to bury the bodies. Soon after, Haicheng fell, and the Japanese army seized the Liaodong Peninsula and pressed toward Shanhaiguan. On January 20, 1895, the Japanese attacked the Shandong Peninsula. The Beiyang Fleet retreated to Liugong Island to hold out and await reinforcements, with ammunition and provisions exhausted.
