Description:
Su Bo-Tao, the retired former director of the culture bureau of Liucheng, and his wife Lin Ying had long enjoyed a leisurely life surrounded by children and grandchildren. But one day, Su Bo-Tao accidentally saw in the newspaper the news of Bai Li-Yun's death and, overcome with emotion, suffered a heart attack and was hospitalized. It turned out that twenty years ago Su Bo-Tao and Bai Li-Yun had had an affair, one that haunted the couple their entire lives; on this matter the two shared only one thing: they had always kept it from their children. Su Bo-Tao's sudden illness caught Lin Ying off guard and baffled her. The children were urgently summoned home. The most beloved second son, Su Qin, rushed back from Hainan, only to have his wife Li Xiao-Dong ask for a divorce the moment he arrived. Su Qin had no choice but to hide it from his seriously ill father and agree to Li Xiao-Dong's demand. He never dreamed that this return to Liucheng would plunge him into a swamp, beginning a period of indescribable marital turmoil.
While tidying the room, Lin Ying suddenly came across the newspaper report of Bai Li-Yun's death and gradually sensed the cause of her husband's illness. But for his sake she had to endure it, and also conceal the divorce together with her son. Su Min, Su Bo-Tao's eldest daughter, had always been considered the most solidly married of the four children. Yet when Zhang Shao-Tong rushed back from out of town to Liucheng and was keeping vigil at his father-in-law's bedside, a young hothead named Yu Qiang burst in and called him "Dad," giving Zhang Shao-Tong a cold sweat. Fortunately Su Bo-Tao was asleep; otherwise no amount of explaining could have saved him.
Not long after his divorce, Su Qin ran into his former Liucheng colleague Chen Juan in Beijing. Both were lonely souls, and the single man and woman became each other's confidants, eventually sparking a romance. To prevent another divorce, Su Qin and Chen Juan came up with an unconventional way to sustain their marriage: they used a contract to formalize their love.
Su Min had no idea that her seemingly impregnable family had harbored hidden dangers from the start. Ever since the appearance of Yu Qiang, the son of Yu Xin-Zhu (Zhang Shao-Tong's first woman), Zhang Shao-Tong's days were like walking on thin ice, treading on fire every day, trembling with fear.
These days trouble after trouble befell Su Bo-Tao's household, and he was like a child who couldn't swim, choking on water again and again. His condition had been stabilizing, but his young and naive niece Yue-Yue inadvertently let slip about Su Qin and Li Xiao-Dong's divorce. Su Bo-Tao finally realized he had been deceived. The Su family's emotions were tangled, each person caught in the entanglements of love and family. The old lady Lin Ying finally learned that Su Bo-Tao still pined for the woman named Bai Li-Yun. Zhang Shao-Tong didn't know how to explain his feelings to his beloved wife Su Min, and the movie ticket incident made him swallow a bitter pill: he suspected Su Min of having an affair. The family's conflicts were finally exposed one by one. Su Qin's secret contract marriage with Chen Juan left Su Bo-Tao not knowing whether to laugh or cry. Zhang Shao-Tong, eager for promotion, hid it from his wife while courting Yu Xin-Zhu, and was worn ragged between Yu Qiang and Su Min, two people he couldn't bear to abandon. When Su Min learned the truth, their marriage headed for destruction.
The marital situations of this family tell us that love is an eternal topic, and marriage is everyone's pursuit. What is true love? The facts show us that after Su Qin and Chen Juan's contract marriage, the lingering shadow of Li Xiao-Dong in Su Qin's mind never left him. After Xiao-Dong's car accident, Su Qin's involuntary, urgent care and protection gave us a direct answer. Chen Juan, faced with the fact that love had seeped into familial affection, decided to seek her own destination. Su Qin and Li Xiao-Dong finally came back together. Wu Shuang, through the emotional experiences of Su Min, Zhang Shao-Tong, and Yu Xin-Zhu, finally awakened; after clarifying his own origins, he came to understand the feelings of Su Min and Zhang Shao-Tong. The Su family, on their journey through life and family, completed their understanding of life through their respective experiences. They finally returned to reality and knew how important harmony is to love and to a family, and that the meaning of harmony is expressed through sincerity and tolerance.
