Description:
In the 1970s, the fervent tide of the Cultural Revolution had dwindled to a trickle. Young students who had once thrown themselves into it body and soul answered the call of the great leader and left the cities one after another for the fields and villages, to receive re-education from the poor and lower-middle peasants. Ke Li (Zhang Yan) and Zhang Jie (Huang Man), educated youths from the south, were close friends. Together they came to settle in Hongqi Village in the northeast, where they met Dong Huan (Li Jing-Jing), a hot-tempered yet kind-hearted girl, and the three became sworn sisters.
Ke Li fell in love with the educated youth Mao Yu-Ming, but the village militia man Liu Da-Peng kept pestering her and standing in her way. Before long word came that they could return to the city, and Ke Li faced a dilemma: she was pregnant, while Mao abandoned his sweetheart and went back to the city alone. Dong Huan did everything she could for her sworn sister's future and took on the burden of raising Ke Li's son, Xiao-Shan.
