More than half of its workers would leave the familiar black soil behind and start a new life in the distant south. Though it pained her to leave her homeland and her mother, the beautiful Da-Li (Wang Qian-Hua) followed her husband onto the southbound train, and so began her arduous life. In 1978, Shanghai girl Gu Min-Hua (Cao Xi-Wen) was assigned after graduation to Plant 820. Show more Because of her striking beauty and her resemblance to Chen Chong in the film Xiao Hua, everyone called her "Xiao Hua." Her arrival drew flocks of suitors, but her beauty also brought her no end of trouble; her love and marriage were full of hardship.
