A murder occurs in the old quarter of the Shanghai French Concession. Besides the victim, Uncle Cai, the scene also yields the injured and unconscious Shanghai Huasheng Radio announcer Lan Miao-Ru. Lan Miao-Ru is blind, has long rented a room in Uncle Cai's house, and often associates with him. After the murder, Inspector Chen Heng-Li of the police station brings his son Chen Tian-Sheng to inspect the scene. From the results of the inspection and Lan Miao-Ru's recollections after she regains consciousness, Tian-Sheng concludes that there must have been two killers, and that Lan Miao-Ru is the "eyewitness." Lan Miao-Ru is the idol of Inspector Chen's wife. After being discharged from the hospital, Lan Miao-Ru is taken by Mrs. Chen to her own home and put up in her son's room. From Lan Miao-Ru's reactions at meals and her expression in the dark, Tian-Sheng feels that something is off about Lan Miao-Ru as an "eyewitness." As soon as she improves slightly, Miao-Ru returns to work at the radio station, and with the help of concerned media reporters, she urges the two murderers to turn themselves in.
Media coverage stirs the anger of the killers Jiang Tao and Baozi and brings deadly danger upon Lan Miao-Ru. As the moon rises above the treetops, Lan Miao-Ru, having returned to Uncle Cai's apartment, is attacked, and the body of Fang Wen-Hua, who ran a gambling den beneath the apartment, is left at the scene. Before any progress is made in Uncle Cai's case, Fang Wen-Hua is murdered too, and the evidence left at the scene shows that the same killer committed the crime, putting pressure on the father-and-son detectives.
Fang Wen-Hua's death deepens Tian-Sheng's suspicions about Lan Miao-Ru. Visiting Lan Miao-Ru, Tian-Sheng discovers that her father was a loyal and patriotic architect who was killed ten years earlier over a sum of disaster relief funds. As Tian-Sheng's investigation and deductions draw ever closer to the truth, the killings continue: Liang Xiu-Feng, Baozi, and Jiang Tao, all connected to the disaster relief funds of ten years ago that Lan Miao-Ru mentioned, are murdered one after another.
After meticulous investigation and scientific deduction, Tian-Sheng resolutely closes the case and brings to justice Lan Miao-Ru, who masterminded Uncle Cai's murder and personally killed Fang Wen-Hua, Liang Xiu-Feng, and Jiang Tao. It turns out that ten years earlier, after Lan Miao-Ru's father was killed by a gang of construction contractor Uncle Cai while protecting disaster relief funds, the then young Lan Xiao-Yu lost her sight from an injury. Five years ago, Lan Xiao-Yu regained her vision, took the name Lan Miao-Ru, and set about taking revenge, plotting murders. The truth of the case comes to light; Lan Miao-Ru takes poison in prison, leaving people with deep reflections on loyalty, revenge, and crime, and with endless longing for her program "Beautiful Life."
