Description:
A murder occurs in the home of Liao Zheng-Hong, a renowned Shanghai textile tycoon: his only son, Liao Ying-Qi, wakes to find a woman with a horrifying face mysteriously hanged in his own bedroom. After the case, rumors spread far and wide, and many believed that the Liao residence had long been said to be haunted, so it must have been the work of an evil spirit. Stranger still, the Liao family flatly denied knowing the deceased. With the case baffling and public pressure mounting, Inspector Chen is assigned to investigate. Show more Interested in the case alongside Inspector Chen is his son, Chen Tian-Sheng. Chen Tian-Sheng studied in Germany and, after returning home, took a job as a translator at the police station. After examining the scene, the two feel that this matter is far from simple.
Moreover, Liao Ying-Qi behaves oddly, and father and son cannot help but grow suspicious. After some investigation, Chen Tian-Sheng discovers many questionable points: Liao Ying-Qi's bedroom was not the primary crime scene, and the victim was strangled to death before being hung up. Even stranger, the Liao family's garden is neglected and desolate everywhere, yet the rose garden alone is lush and blooming, and outsiders are forbidden to enter. And it seems every member of the Liao family has a secret, leaving one utterly baffled. After extensive inquiries, Chen Tian-Sheng learns that the deceased was named Yao Hong, a dance hostess at a song-and-dance hall, and that she was three months pregnant.
To gather further clues, Liao Ying-Qi and forensic doctor Han Ling go to the song-and-dance hall to investigate. There they inadvertently discover Yao Hong's admirer, Liu Xuan, and follow him to Yao Hong's residence. Before Chen Tian-Sheng can react, Liu Xuan is beaten unconscious, and the attacker is none other than the Liao family's servant, Zhou Yu-Fang. For a time the investigation stalls, but just then Yao Hong's close friend, Sister Feng, appears and accuses Liao Zheng-Hong of being the murderer. Before the killing, Liao Zheng-Hong often came to the song-and-dance hall to see Yao Hong, though he never danced, and Sister Feng suspects he is the killer. Faced with Sister Feng's suspicion, Liao Zheng-Hong offers no defense, and the Chen father and son feel that things are not so simple.
Sure enough, through meticulous reasoning, the true murderer is brought to light. It turns out that Liao Ying-Qi and Yao Hong were middle school classmates who had long been in love. But fate is fickle: after Yao Hong's father went bankrupt, she had to work as a dance hostess to help support her family, and she took up with the idle Liu Xuan and became pregnant with his child. Yet in order to live a better life, Yao Hong still agreed to Liao Ying-Qi's marriage proposal. When Liao Zheng-Hong and his wife learned of this, they firmly opposed it, and Yao Hong decided to come to the Liao house late at night to negotiate with Liao Zheng-Hong. Unexpectedly, Liu Xuan followed her all the way and, in a fit of rage, killed her. Good and evil have their consequences, true love is silent, and too many secrets lie hidden in this rose garden.
