Description:
In the French Concession, Ding Cong-Wen, former director of the Bo'ai Orphanage, is found murdered in his apartment — the killer was ruthless, finishing him with a single blow. Strangely, the cigarette butts and ashes at the scene suggest the killer did not flee in a hurry after the deed. Who would hold a grudge against a down-and-out old man? And what secret did the ashes conceal before they were burned? Inspector Chen Heng-Li of the police station and his son Tian-Sheng have barely begun to make sense of it when the son of Shanghai tycoon Lin Quan is kidnapped in Suzhou. Show more Lin Quan forcibly summons Chen Heng-Li to his mansion and tasks him with securing the release of the Lin family's young master, Lin Yun.
The records Inspector Chen uncovers at the Bo'ai Orphanage reveal that the captive in the kidnappers' hands is none other than Xiao Wu, the illegitimate son born twenty years ago to Lin Quan and the household maid Cui-Yu. After Cui-Yu's death, Xiao Wu was left an orphan and taken in by the orphanage director, Ding Cong-Wen. Following the kidnappers' demands, Tian-Sheng goes to Suzhou to rescue the hostage, but returns empty-handed.
