When the battle reports reached the capital, the court was furious, the court officials were in an uproar, and the pro-war and pro-peace factions argued endlessly. Show more Facing this perilous situation, Ci Xi, who had just seized real power at court, resolved to go to war with the French army. She urgently summoned the long-retired Huai Army general Liu Ming-Chuan back to the capital, entrusting him at this critical moment with the rank of provincial governor to oversee Taiwan's military affairs and shoulder the heavy burden of defending Taiwan against the French. After many twists and turns, Liu Ming-Chuan finally won the court's trust and was at last able to set out. In order to strike at the Qing government and gain the upper hand at the negotiating table, the French army planned to intercept and kill Liu Ming-Chuan. Learning of this, Liu Ming-Chuan came to Shanghai under the title of deputy envoy to the negotiations. He deliberately frequented brothels and courtesan houses to mislead the French. Through clever maneuvering, he finally found his opportunity and was about to set out.
