Description:
In the final years of the Southern Song, the Mongol commander Möngke led his army against Fancheng. The defending general Zhang Tian-Shun shot out his left eye, but the city still fell. Seeing that all was lost, Zhang Tian-Shun entrusted the Yellow Dragon Sword to his officer Fan Guo-Xing as a token to rally the heroes of the martial world, then cut his own throat, ordering Fan Guo-Xing to take his head and feign surrender to Möngke. Fan Guo-Xing made his way into the enemy camp, assassinated Möngke and fought his way out.
From then on Fan Guo-Xing was branded a traitor who sold out his country for glory. Later he and his only son Fan Qiu-Sheng hid their names and lived deep in the countryside. Twenty years on, they were discovered by martial artists, and father and son took refuge with Feng Bao, the "Number One Sword of the Central Plains." But Feng Bao had already been bought by the Yuan army, so Fan Guo-Xing killed him, and the martial world reviled him all the more.
While wandering with his father, Fan Qiu-Sheng befriended Liu Qing-Lian, daughter of Liu Xiang-Yun, mistress of the Heartless Valley, as well as the master and disciple Poison Tathagata and Mu Ling-Zhi. To avenge herself on Qiu Wan-Ren, the "One Sword Through the Heart," who had left her years before, Liu Xiang-Yun ordered Liu Qing-Lian to kill him.
Ji Ru-Huo brought along Zhang Qi, raised from childhood by the Mongols and passed off as the son of Zhang Tian-Shun, and joined forces with Ling Chu-Feng, head of the Famous Sword School, to sow division among the martial factions resisting the Yuan.
Ling Chu-Feng, jealous of his wife's close friendship with Qiu Wan-Ren, once captured Qiu Wan-Ren and destroyed his martial arts.
Having lost his skills, Qiu Wan-Ren soon recovered them with the help of Master Wu-Chen.
Yue Shi-Hao, a descendant of Yue Fei and lord of Yue Fortress, was used by Mongol spies and the Famous Sword School and gave his daughter Yue Pei-Pei in marriage to Zhang Qi. At a martial arts assembly convened to judge Fan Guo-Xing, Fan Guo-Xing, unable to bear the false accusation, cut his own throat. Later Yue Shi-Hao too had his eyes poisoned blind by villains.
When Ling Chu-Feng had outlived his usefulness, Ji Ru-Huo destroyed the Famous Sword School and killed Ling Chu-Feng's daughter. Ling Chu-Feng fled to the Heartless Valley, where he lived as a prisoner and slave, but by chance met Master Wu-Chen, also trapped in the valley, and took him as his teacher. Enlightened at last, Ling Chu-Feng gained great understanding and received martial arts teaching from Wu-Chen.
After countless hardships in his quest to clear his father's name, Fan Qiu-Sheng was once cast away on a desolate island, where the great martial artist Wen Ru-Lin taught him martial arts. But Wen Ru-Lin was soon killed by Long Guo-Yun, the state preceptor who had defected to the Yuan. Then on the island Fan Qiu-Sheng met Zhang Tian-Yi, younger brother of Zhang Tian-Shun. Fan and Zhang returned to the Central Plains.
