Story Outline
Guo Fan is the head of the planning department at Xinsheng Communications, but because his boss Sun Yiren often makes arbitrary decisions, he is far from fulfilled. On top of that, ratings for a TV program that the company had been producing externally have recently plummeted, and the station intends to take it back for in-house production. Other departments in the company all blame Guo Fan in turn, and he is utterly discouraged. Moreover, his college girlfriend Xu Ying-Xia has devoted years to the development of Chinese computers and recently won the "Industrial Technology Achievement Award." Show more Their classmates are preparing a celebration for her. Guo Fan reminisces about old feelings, thinks of how others have achieved success while he has accomplished nothing, and feels even more inadequate.
On the very day of the celebration, Sun Yiren finally authorizes Guo Fan to carry out the "Grand Vision" program that he had originally planned but that had been rejected. The program's main content is a mysterious host introducing people from all walks of life who work quietly and contribute greatly.
Guo Fan's passion for work is reignited, and with Xu Ying-Xia's assistance, who provides a great deal of material, the content of "Grand Vision" becomes even richer. For the program, Guo Fan needs all the more to bring in Xu Ying-Xia as the host. Within the company there is fierce opposition at first, but in the end the ratings prove that Guo Fan's decision was completely correct, and Xu Ying-Xia seems to become an idol of the audience overnight.
As the work progresses, the feelings between Guo Fan and Ying-Xia grow day by day, but problems follow. Because Ying-Xia has become a celebrity in the communications world, excessive social engagements and flattery leave her dazed and lost. She even neglects her original computer work and no longer has time to visit her father… None of this is what Guo Fan intended. Unable to persuade her otherwise, Guo Fan blames himself deeply — he feels that although "Grand Vision" succeeded, it cost the computer field a talent, while the communications world gained an empty idol!
In the end, through her father and the inspiration of those ordinary great people featured in the program, Ying-Xia deeply realizes the emptiness of fame and fortune and Guo Fan's sincerity, and on the program she tells millions of viewers of her choice — where I am needed, there I go.
