Description:
Liu Yu-Ru, daughter of a cloth merchant, endured hardship from childhood: her birth mother was gravely ill, her stepmother was unkind, and her father paid her no heed. She had no choice but to be cautious and meticulous, and for over a decade she played the model of a well-bred young lady. Yet to her dismay, she who harbored dreams of marriage was married off by her family to Gu Jiu-Si, a wastrel notorious throughout Yangzhou. Gu Jiu-Si assumed Liu Yu-Ru had married him only to cling to power and wealth, and held her in contempt. Show more Liu Yu-Ru came to her senses: she could not tie her fate to marriage or to another person, and resolved to learn the ways of business from Gu's mother, so as to realize her own worth truly, independently, and brilliantly. Through her efforts Liu Yu-Ru gradually grew adept at business, and in the process discovered Gu Jiu-Si's purest goodness and ardent sincerity, and the two drew ever closer. But just then the military governor of Yangzhou acted tyrannically, leaving the common people homeless, and the Gu family was forced to flee. Watching the countless refugees, Gu Jiu-Si grew up overnight. To end the chaos and let the people live in peace, Gu Jiu-Si started as a constable and rose to Minister of Revenue, and together with like-minded allies swept away entrenched abuses and lightened taxes and corvee. Liu Yu-Ru, for her part, established charitable halls at home and built commercial ties abroad, bringing abundance of goods and well-being to the people. Together the two wrote a celebrated tale of a golden age.
