Six-year-old Xiao-Ya's father, Yang Fan, works as a photographer at a company. His wife died of illness two years ago, but before she passed away she wrote a whole trunkful of letters for Xiao-Ya, which Yang Fan mails out on schedule. Xiao-Ya firmly believes that her mother is somewhere far away and will one day be able to return to her side. Yang Fan is busy with work and also has to look after his daughter, and he often finds himself in a fluster. Ding Yi, a female photojournalist for a children's magazine, meets Yang Fan by chance through work, and the two appreciate each other and feel drawn together. Once, while away on a shoot, Yang Fan cannot make it back because of an unexpected turn of events, and Xiao-Ya comes down with a high fever; Ding Yi stays by her side through the night. Remembering her own childhood, Ding Yi feels great tenderness for Xiao-Ya, who has lost her mother. The two adults decide to give it a try and let Ding Yi appear as the mother. The first days are harmonious, but one flaw after another begins to surface. Xiao-Ya grows suspicious and says that Ding Yi is not her mother. The truth has been revealed, and Ding Yi decides to make another effort.
