Description:
The series begins in the later years of Kangxi's reign, when the imperial princes vie for favor and the throne, and gradually reveals the complex character of the Fourth Prince — the future Yongzheng Emperor. Ambitious, quick-witted and decisive, cunning and ruthless, he is meek as a lamb before his father. Crown Prince Yinreng and the Eighth Brother Yinsi regard him as a thorn in their side and repeatedly plot against him, but he foils them every time.
After Kangxi's death, he conspires with Long Keduo, commander of the imperial guards, forges the testament and seizes the throne. Show more By taking as his concubine the sister of Nian Gengyao, a key minister in charge of border defense — Lady Nian (Consort Dunshu) — he wins over Nian Gengyao and has him hold in check the Fourteenth Brother Yinti, who wielded military power. The Fourteenth Brother was Kangxi's most beloved son, appointed General of the Pacifying Forces, to whom the emperor intended to pass the throne; at the time he was away with his troops. Hearing of his father's death, he hurries back to the capital with his army, but Yongzheng has already taken the throne first. Yongzheng then adopts a series of measures that give the political situation a new look and lift the spirits of the army and the people, consolidating imperial power in an instant. By the time the Fourteenth Brother reaches the capital, he can no longer overthrow his rule.
After ascending the throne, Yongzheng begins to deal with the opposition, bringing the Fourteenth, Eighth and Ninth Brothers to heel. And when he feels that Long Keduo and Nian Gengyao, who once backed his accession, are boasting of their merits, acting arrogantly and growing too powerful to control, he strikes resolutely: he executes Nian Gengyao and imprisons Long Keduo.
On his deathbed, Yongzheng accepts the advice of his son Hong Li, reconciles with his Fourteenth Brother Yinti and entrusts Hong Li to his care.
