Description:
Set in Beijing and the eight counties east of the capital in the late Qing dynasty, the film is based on the true story of a man who escaped from the imperial palace and whose palm had been inscribed with the character "hua" (flower) by Empress Ci Xi herself. It tells of the rise and fall of the Beggars' Guild, a "beggar" organization active in the capital region during the final years of the Qing.
On the tenth day of the tenth month of the third year of the Guangxu reign (1876), Empress Ci Xi was celebrating her fortieth birthday. Show more Returning to the palace after admiring chrysanthemums on Coal Hill, she was walking along the West Second Long Street of the Inner City when she suddenly heard a child crying. Ci Xi ordered the child found, and it turned out to be Ji Hai-Zi, the son of Yu Ma, the wet nurse Ci Xi favored most. Ci Xi remarked offhandedly, "Where did this little beggar come from!" Then, at the urging of the eunuch Li Lian-Ying, she wrote the character "hua" on the child's left palm. It turned out that before entering the palace, Li Lian-Ying and the boy's mother, Yu Ma, had been childhood sweethearts! Back in Yu Ma's humble room, Li Lian-Ying used a needle to prick the character "hua" written by Ci Xi firmly into the child's palm.
