Description:
Yu Shu-Cheng, a son of peasants, was determined to win through his own efforts the life and social standing his father's generation had only dreamed of. But when it was exposed that he had married to bring good fortune to his ailing father, he was expelled from school. Yu Shu-Cheng leaves his first wife, Qing Ping, and goes to a city in the south, where he buys a fake diploma, takes the name Yu Jie, and begins his adventures in the city.
In the city, Yu Jie meets Mu Jia, the head of the Jinyun Company, who recommends him for a post at Jianghehai University, where he wins the appreciation of the chancellor, Lao Xiang. Yu Jie's abilities are given free rein, and with Mu Jia's help he gradually gains the money and status he has longed for.
Xiang Xiao-Xiao, a television host, is simple, kind, and upright by nature. While making a feature about the university, she gets to know Yu Jie and is drawn to his talent, gradually falling in love with him. Their feelings are mutual, and they soon marry.
On the surface, Mu Jia is generous and charitable, an eager supporter of education, but in secret she is a sinister and ruthless drug lord. She is attracted to Yu Jie and constantly tempts him with money, beauty, and power. As Yu Jie sinks ever deeper, he comes to see Mu Jia's true face and wants only to leave her, but he has fallen too far to free himself.
Yu Jie wavers endlessly between true feeling, desire, and conscience, losing his way in the choice between love and lust.
