Description:
The late Qing, the early Republic — a time of turmoil. The ancient and rotten Qing Empire comes crashing down, and the life of Pu Yi (Dayo Wong), the last emperor of the Qing, along with those of all his subjects and ministers, is turned upside down. Amid the shifting tides, this emperor takes two women of utterly different temperaments as his empress and concubine — Guo Bu (Jiang Wen-Li) and Wen Xiu (Amanda Qin). When the Zhi-Feng War breaks out, he and his wives leave the palace where their forebears lived. Show more The outgoing, Western-leaning Guo Bu yearns for a free life; Pu Yi, nursing dreams of restoration, does not shrink from cooperating with the Japanese; and Wen Xiu, feeling ever more neglected, longs for change. Pu Yi becomes the first emperor "forced" by law to divorce, and under the Japanese manipulation he establishes the puppet state of Manchukuo. In daily life he and Guo Bu wound each other, enduring the rupture and torment of their feelings.
He is a special citizen shaped by a troubled age, and he is destined to walk a bitter journey steeped in blood and tears.
