Description:
A fierce wind whipped up the fallen leaves, and the heavenly dog devoured the sun. This ominous sign from the heavens startled Bao Zheng (Jin Chao-Chun) and his retinue as they toured Zheng County in Caizhou. Suddenly, a band of mysterious men dropped from the sky, and with a few swift moves they seized Bao Zheng,轿 and all, and carried him off. At the Gao mansion in Zheng County, Bao Zheng paid a visit to Wang Qiu-Rong (Ngai Chau-Wa), who had once been chosen to enter the palace. Qiu-Rong produced the dragon-and-phoenix bellyband, a token from the days when Emperor Renzong of Song (Zhang Tie-Lin) had favored her, and declared that Tian-Yi was the current crown prince. Bao Zheng and Gongsun Ce (Fan Hung-Hsuan) concluded that this matter was deeply connected to the imperial court. Just then the Gao family's second son, Tian-You (Xia Yu), burst in, and Bao Zheng noticed that he was simple-minded, while Qiu-Rong and Tian-Yi shielded him at every turn.
It turned out that years ago Qiu-Rong, pregnant with the imperial bloodline, had left the palace to give birth, and was later taken in by Gao Xu (Long Long). Raised from childhood with a palace-style education, Tian-Yi believed himself to be of dragon descent, longing to reclaim his rightful place among his ancestors and use what he had learned to benefit the people. He did not know that his biological father was actually Gao Xu, and that his younger brother Tian-You was the true Son of Heaven. Still less did Tian-Yi know that his father had stooped to conspiring with the charlatan Quan Da-Dao (Pai Ying) to cause the miscarriage of the daughter of Grand Preceptor Pang (Tu Man-Sheng), step by step pushing Tian-Yi toward the throne—all of it a scheme by Gao Xu and Quan Da-Dao to force Qiu-Rong into submission by threatening Tian-You's life, all for their own gain.
Bao Zheng ordered Zhan Zhao (Vincent Chiu Yan-Jun) to enter the palace and investigate Qiu-Rong's identity, and the emperor learned of it. Renzong gave Bao Zheng a deadline to bring Tian-Yi to the capital, intending to install him as crown prince. Gao Xu ordered Quan Da-Dao to hunt down and kill Tian-You to eliminate any future threat. Qiu-Rong hastily ordered her maid Xi-Que to take the dragon-and-phoenix bellyband and flee with Tian-You by night. Xi-Que was killed, and Bao Zheng concluded that the murderer was the Daoist Liu Dao-Qing (that is, Quan Da-Dao), whom he had personally sent to prison years before, and reported to Renzong that the crown prince should have a red birthmark on his right foot. Gao Xu burned Tian-Yi's right foot with fire, and at the same time told him the truth...
A grave mistake has been made—how will Tian-Yi choose? What will become of the fate of these two brothers?
