Description:
In 1948, in the late stage of the War of Liberation, our army had already shifted from strategic defense to strategic offense. Liu and Deng led the Central Plains Field Army across the Yellow River and established a base area in the Dabie Mountains. Following the guiding principles of the Party Central Committee headed by Mao Ze-Dong and Zhu De, Liu and Deng, Chen and Li, and Chen and Xie adopted a operational strategy of coordinating three major army groups while containing the enemy on both flanks, pushing into western Henan and opening up a base area in Henan, Shaanxi, and Hubei. Show more Chen Geng received orders to prepare for the liberation of Nanyang and to open this great gateway to southwestern Henan. On the other side, Wang Ling-Yun, a trusted favorite general of Chiang Kai-Shek, was ordered to garrison Nanyang and establish the 13th Pacification Area, in a vain attempt to coordinate with Xinyang and Xiangyang and block the Communist forces from advancing south. With both sides evenly matched, a great battle was about to erupt. With the cooperation of our underground Party, Chen Geng's army exploited the enemy's internal contradictions, repeatedly redeployed troops, concentrated superior forces, and defeated the enemy piecemeal. After thirty days of bloody fighting, Nanyang was finally liberated and the Kuomintang troops were completely wiped out.
