Description:
Qian Da-Bao, village head of Shangshui, goes to the county's "Red Banner of Prosperity" competition and loses to Xiashui by a single vote, failing to win the title. At the celebration banquet, Qian Da-Bao and Xiashui's village head Zheng Lao-Hen, having drunk a little, make a bet: if within a year Shangshui's output surpasses Xiashui's, Zheng Lao-Hen will come to Shangshui and carry Qian Da-Bao's briefcase; if Qian Da-Bao loses, he will give his daughter Qian Duo-Duo to the Zheng family as a daughter-in-law. The two seal the wager in public.
Qian Da-Bao sinks deep into plans for how to surpass Xiashui. Man Yi-Hua wholeheartedly supports his idea of getting rich, but even after racking their brains over every profitable venture in the village, together they cannot reach ten million in output, which plunges Qian Da-Bao into deep distress. Just then he receives a call from his daughter Qian Duo-Duo, who is studying tourism management at a provincial university. She tells him she has won an investment project: turning the Flower Island outside the village into a provincial-level tourist attraction, which would lift the village's sightseeing agriculture to a new level. Qian Da-Bao is overjoyed. At the same time, someone reports to him that Qian Er-Bao is secretly hauling stones off Flower Island. Qian Da-Bao guesses that the stone might be a chance to get rich and goes to the city's building-materials market to inquire. Sure enough, the booming construction market has spurred the rise of the building-materials industry, stone has become a hot-selling product, and the stones on Shangshui's Flower Island are precisely the most sought-after raw material on the market.
Qian Da-Bao sees new hope for prosperity, but this new hope stands in sharp conflict with the Flower Island project his daughter won. This leaves Qian Da-Bao hesitant. But Xiashui, having grown rich first, deeply provokes him by showing off with a group purchase of cars in Shangshui and by flaunting its wealth at the peasants' sports meet held by the two villages. This makes Qian Da-Bao willing to sacrifice the investment project his daughter won and resolve to quarry stone on Flower Island, defeating Xiashui with twenty million in output. Though this decision meets opposition from Man Yi-Hua and Qian Duo-Duo, it wins the support of the whole village, giving Qian Da-Bao a hundredfold confidence that he will beat Xiashui's Zheng Lao-Hen.
Ever since his polluting factory was shut down, Qian Er-Bao has been looking for a chance to turn his fortunes around, and the stone project gives him a glimmer of hope. When he discovers that Qian Da-Bao has also set his eyes on the stone, he knows it will be very hard to get the project, so he uses Qian Duo-Duo's Flower Island project to resist Qian Da-Bao's development while secretly seeking partners and quietly pushing forward a plan to quarry the stone. Qian Duo-Duo and Qian Da-Bao clash fiercely over whether to build on Flower Island or quarry it. Shangshui is in turmoil, restless and unstable. But the villagers side with Qian Da-Bao, and Qian Duo-Duo's Flower Island project is forced to halt. To keep the special investment for Flower Island, the township enterprise bureau asks Qian Duo-Duo to find another mountain with fine natural scenery and rework it into a tourism project, but at this moment she is thinking of quitting her job and going south to develop her career. Qian Da-Bao cannot bear to let his daughter go and practically drags her to see Apricot Ridge, whose natural scenery is better than Flower Island's. To his shock, Apricot Ridge has already been completely quarried out, leaving only a heap of rubble.
The village at the foot of Apricot Ridge has emptied out because the ridge disappeared, and the school has closed. This reality stuns Qian Da-Bao. He suddenly wakes up: if Shangshui develops Flower Island, it will become a second Apricot Ridge. Qian Da-Bao backs off, but at the same time he is in a great dilemma, because the villagers, stirred up by him, are already eager to quarry Flower Island. Qian Da-Bao wants to wash his hands of it, but Man Yi-Hua and Qian Duo-Duo hope he will withstand the pressure and, for the sake of Shangshui's descendants, preserve Flower Island. After Qian Da-Bao announces his intention not to develop Flower Island, the whole village turns against him, and he is suspended as village head. Qian Da-Bao vows that even as an ordinary villager he will keep Flower Island.
Fearing that Qian Duo-Duo's Flower Island project will revive, Qian Er-Bao conspires with the unscrupulous businessman Su Dong-Sheng to blow up Flower Island. Qian Da-Bao, Qian Duo-Duo, and Man Yi-Hua go up onto Flower Island together to stop them. In the contest between good and evil, Qian Duo-Duo is bitten by a snake, and on the brink of death her courage in defending Flower Island to the end educates the villagers of Shangshui. Through everyone's efforts, Flower Island is saved. Qian Er-Bao, ashamed that he has once again gone astray, wants to end his life, but Qian Da-Bao saves him with family love. The people of Shangshui, willing to give up money already within reach for the sake of the environment, move Xiashui's Zheng Lao-Hen, who comes to Qian Da-Bao to concede defeat: because Qian Da-Bao did not develop Flower Island and preserved a beautiful piece of nature, not only did Shangshui escape an environmental crisis, but Xiashui was also spared from severe pollution. Under clear water and blue skies, Shangshui moves toward shared prosperity.
