Description:
In the stormy 1920s, the head of the Mou family, the wealthiest clan in Jiaodong, suddenly dies. The young widow Jiang Zhen-Guo engages in a breathtaking struggle with her uncles and unexpectedly takes charge of the household. Scheming within the family, oppression by officials and warlords, raids by bandits and thieves, forced occupation by the Japanese devils... The beautiful, clever, and capable young madame calmly leads the family through crisis after crisis. She embraces the advanced ideals of Mr. Wang, the tutor at the estate school — benevolence, equality, freedom — and applies them to managing the clan, yet dares not accept the love of the teacher, who is merely a servant. Enduring inner loneliness, solitude, and repression, she struggles bitterly for twenty years, but in the end fails to save the family from falling apart.
