Description:
A small town by the river and sea in the 1980s.
A Tao has just lost her husband, and her only son Tong-Zhou breaks his leg at a school sports meet while saving a classmate. A Tao endures untold hardships, taking her son from doctor to doctor until she is nearly ruined, yet she still cannot cure his illness. At the train station they meet a blind girl who sings for money, Lan Zi. At Tong-Zhou's insistence, A Tao brings Lan Zi home.
A Tao meets Nan Fei, a boy with no arms, and after many twists and turns, the kindhearted A Tao takes in this disabled child as well. A Tao struggles to get by with the children. Then one evening A Tao finds an abandoned baby at her door — Yue Yue. The kindhearted A Tao adopts this little life too.
Thus a special family is born: the widowed A Tao, living hand to mouth with several disabled children.
Before long, A Tao falls ill. During surgery the doctor opens her chest and immediately sews it up again, because the tumor has already spread throughout her body, and with severe anemia, there is no way to treat her.
Beside the father's grave there is now another new grave, and the four children kneel long before their mother's tombstone.
More than ten years later, the children have all grown up and come to the city to make their way, enduring endless bitterness and hardship.
Tong-Zhou has grown into a handsome young man, but a crutch blocks every path forward. Every attempt to find work ends in failure.
Yue Yue is admitted to a teachers' college, but before long she is asked to leave. The reason: she is found to have a mental illness. Liu Tong-Zhou silently bears it all. Lan Zi quarrels with Yue Yue, and in a fit of anger leaves home for the provincial capital.
With the help of Huang Gang, chairman of the disabled persons' federation, Liu Tong-Zhou opens a small supermarket.
The armless Nan Fei immerses himself in his own world, writing poetry and fiction and practicing calligraphy. Meanwhile Lan Zi, far away in the provincial capital, meets Tian Ye, who brings her home. Lan Zi meets Tian Ye's father — Tian Ming, a professor at the conservatory.
Years ago Yang Liu abandoned Yue Yue for her own sake, and though she and Yue Yue meet and clash many times, she never realizes that Yue Yue is her own daughter.
Tong-Zhou runs the supermarket while attending night school; his diligence and steadiness catch the attention of his teacher Sha Sha. As they spend more time together, Tong-Zhou's melancholy eyes and deep singing voice draw Sha Sha deeply. But when Sha Sha confesses her feelings, Tong-Zhou loses his nerve. Heartbroken, Sha Sha leaves him for the provincial capital.
Nan Fei finds a master and begins practicing calligraphy with his feet and mouth.
The handicrafts Yue Yue makes catch the eye of a customer, who places a large order, and Liu Tong-Zhou seizes the chance to open a welfare handicrafts factory. During this time Yue Yue meets and falls in love with Long Jun, a worker at the disabled persons' federation.
Tian Ming recognizes Lan Zi as the daughter he abandoned twenty years ago, while the unwitting Tian Ye falls in love with Lan Zi.
Nan Fei happens to save a woman attempting suicide, Li Yu-Hong, and they fall in love. But Li Yu-Hong's family firmly opposes it and tricks her into returning to her hometown. Nan Fei decides to go to Li Yu-Hong's home.
Long Jun discovers that Yue Yue is mentally ill and, with no other choice, breaks up with her. Looking at his heartbroken sister, Liu Tong-Zhou decides to take on the responsibility of caring for her. Just then, Liu Tong-Zhou learns that Sha Sha is coming back.
Half-siblings in love; the pangs of conscience after abandoning a child; whether to give up love for the sake of duty; whether to fight for one's own happiness against worldly conventions…
All these questions, all these tremors, all these moving moments are in the twenty-episode TV series "Hua Kai You Sheng."
