After the wedding, Xiao-Ming gives birth to a daughter, Hua Da-Jie. Cao's father (Li Wan-Nian), who favors boys over girls, is deeply disappointed. Bai-Wan can only cajole his mother-in-law, Zheng Xiu-Lan (Ding Jia-Li), into coming to Shanghai to help them look after the child. Show more Bai-Wan, who studied fine arts, somehow ends up in sales with his good friend Chou Jian (Wang Ce), and the results are predictably poor. Xiao-Ming also ends up staying at home for reasons of her own. Meanwhile, Chou Jian's girlfriend Xiao-Man gets into a conflict with his family over buying an apartment and leaves with a Hong Kong businessman. Zheng Xiu-Lan, furious that her in-laws have still not come to Shanghai to look after their granddaughter, returns to Chongqing in a huff. Cao's parents have no choice but to come to Shanghai. To make his daughter-in-law bear him a grandson, Cao's father tampers with her contraceptive pills, causing Xiao-Ming to become pregnant by accident. This infuriates Bai-Wan, who believes his wife has been unfaithful. After the truth comes out, Xiao-Ming is utterly disillusioned with Cao's parents.
