The story takes place during the Zhengde reign of the Ming dynasty, in Fengxiang County, Baoji Prefecture, Shaanxi Province. The mother of the hereditary commander Qin Kun-Peng sent a jade bracelet to Sun Yu-Feng, and Sun Yu-Feng gave back a painting of lotuses, and the two families were betrothed. You Cai-Feng's maternal uncle and aunt, Chu Sheng and Madame Jia, spent the night at the You household and were both murdered, and Madame Jia's head disappeared. Shang Chao-Feng picked up a bundle at night, saw that it was a woman's head, and threw it into the cinnabar well. Show more Fearing that the shop assistant Sun Yu-Xiu would report him to the authorities, he pushed him into the well and killed him. The next day he went to the county office to file a complaint, falsely claiming that Sun Yu-Xiu had stolen silver and goods and fled. The county magistrate Qian Shu-Qing, manipulated by the clerk Ren Yi, ordered Sun Yu-Xiu's father, Sun Guo-An, to pay compensation; Sun Guo-An refused to accept this and was thrown into prison. Sun Yu-Feng's father, having been taken into custody, came to court to argue his case, but Qian Shu-Qing said she was making a baseless scene and had her locked up in prison.
In the women's cell, Long Cai-Feng explained everything in detail, and Qin Kun-Peng's betrothed, Sun Yu-Feng, seeing that the case was unjust, resolved to go to the prefectural office to appeal. Prefect Ning Xin came to the county for a retrial, but Ren Yi bribed the prefectural female coroner Shui Mi-Tao, who falsely accused You Cai-Feng of losing her chastity. Ning Xin believed it and wrongly convicted You Cai-Feng and Qin Kun-Peng of adultery and murder. Sun Yu-Feng refused to accept this and appealed to the province. At the retrial in the surveillance commission, the female coroner Lan Cai-Hua cleverly tampered with You Cai-Feng's urine sample and mistakenly determined that You Cai-Feng was pregnant, so that the monstrous injustice done to You Cai-Feng and Qin Kun-Peng could not be redressed. The investigating official Du Zhong-Ren, seeing that the case was false, disguised himself and conducted a private investigation, uncovered the truth, retrieved Madame Jia's head and Sun Yu-Xiu's body from the cinnabar well, and brought Shang Chao-Feng, Hu Mei-Po, and Hu Da-Leng to justice.
