Description:
In the Zhengde era of the Ming dynasty, the watery towns of Jiangnan produced one gifted scholar after another, and none shone brighter than Tang Bo-Hu (Lau Hoi-Wai). When he passed the provincial examination as jieyuan, crowds lined the streets hoping to catch a glimpse of him, and even high officials and imperial relatives vied to befriend this great talent. But glory is like a flash of lightning in a dream: in the blink of an eye Tang was thrown into prison on a trumped-up charge, and though the emperor eventually pardoned him, the coldness and fickleness of human nature struck him all the more sharply. Show more Looking back on a life of dizzying rises and falls, Tang Yin found himself turning away from fame and fortune, content to leave his free spirit to the world. Afterward, Tang Bo-Hu befriended Zhu Zhi-Shan (Chi Shuai), Wen Zheng-Ming (Li Li), Xu Zhen-Qing (Gao Hao) and other scholars of his time; they roamed together, wrote poems and painted, and Tang Bo-Hu moreover won the heart of Qiu Xiang (Zhang Li) with his cleverness, leaving behind a tale celebrated through the ages. He also outwitted the muddle-headed Prince Ning, and in the watery towns of Jiangnan wrote one stirring legend after another.
So it is: others laugh that I am too mad, and I laugh that they cannot see through me.
