Description:
In 1948, the struggle between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party had reached its most critical moment. In the Kuomintang-controlled areas, the political and economic system had fallen into chaos and spiraled out of control: prices soared, corrupt officials ran rampant, and the rule of the Nationalist government had long been as precarious as a pile of eggs — the great edifice was about to collapse. Meanwhile, at the other end of the country, Fang Meng-Ao (Liu Ye), a colonel and instructor at the Jianqiao Aviation School of the Kuomintang Air Force, was standing trial for disobeying a military order. Show more Fang came from a wealthy and prominent family; he was the son of Fang Bu-Ting (Wang Qing-Xiang), manager of the Beiping branch of the Central Bank, but he had another identity as well — an underground member of our Party planted within the Kuomintang army. Through Jiang Jing-Guo's intervention, Fang escaped punishment and was transferred to the Reserve Cadre Bureau of the Ministry of National Defense, and subsequently took part in Operation "Peacock Flies Southeast," investigating embezzlement at the Beiping branch. Caught in the turbulent currents of the era, he faced suspicion and investigation from within the Kuomintang army, secret plots and infighting from his colleagues, and the countless dangers that the flames of war brought forth. Fang and all the underground workers forged the cornerstone of New China's rise with their loyal blood and devoted hearts…
