Description:
More than three hundred years ago, on the southeastern coast, there was an "island of exile" where criminals were banished for generations. Besides honest trades, its inhabitants also turned to piracy to stand against the authorities and threats from all sides. The authorities tried to lure the pirate leader Hai Ye (Simon Yam) into surrender with promises of high office and rich reward, but Hai Ye flatly refused.
The island teemed with all sorts of people, and a dazzling flower street gave the adventure-seeking men who drifted there a sweet, dreamlike tenderness. Show more The Zhongyuan Festival was the island's grandest annual event. During the Zhongyuan rites, the "singing courtesans who mourn the dead" drew the most attention as they soothed the departed with song.
The madam of Huayang House, Yue Niang (Sandra Ng), trained twin entertainer girls of utterly different temperaments: Xiao Xue (Michelle Chen) and Xiao Shuang (Ivy Chen). As the "Huayang Twin Companions," they were at the height of their fame. Yet the sisters, driven by a secret unknown to outsiders, did not shrink from committing murder! Yue Niang told Xiao Xue to pin the blame on the musician (Joseph Cheng), but Xiao Xue, in love with him, chose to sacrifice herself to protect her love. Xiao Shuang had a close friend, the pirate Scar (Jerry Yan), but at the same time she also moved in the orbit of Li Ershao (Mao Zi-Jun), the son-in-law of a wealthy tea merchant. Li Ershao wavered between Xiao Shuang and his lawful wife Zhen Fu-Rong (Li Xiao-Ran), and unwittingly became a player in a high-stakes gamble of lust and money devised by Xiao Shuang. Learning of her husband's betrayal, Zhen Fu-Rong jumped into the sea in despair, was rescued by Hai Ye, and the two developed an ambiguous affection. Yet Hai Ye, who had never trusted women, unfortunately fell into another trap…
In this high-stakes gamble of love, power, and desire, who will be the winner?
