The first season of The Young Escort of Hedong, starring Li Yun-Xiao and Zheng Ye-Cheng, has wrapped filming. The project’s official account announced the news on October 27 and released a group photograph of the team. Li finished her scenes a day earlier, on her birthday. Dianyingjie’s November 7 report revisits that completed shoot rather than announcing a new production milestone.
Behind a title promising martial-arts adventures is, above all, a comedy about keeping a family business afloat. A once-renowned escort agency has fallen on hard times, forcing its employees to resume transporting goods under guard. They take cheap jobs, pay off old debts and unravel mysterious incidents along the way. Fighting on dangerous roads matters, but so do negotiating, earning a living and keeping one’s word.
Li plays Yan Ruyu, who takes temporary charge of the agency. She has no extraordinary martial prowess: determination and persistence help her shoulder responsibility for its people and finances. Zheng plays Shu Xiuzhong, an outwardly frail adviser who uses careful calculation to solve problems. The central pair therefore share the responsibilities of manager and strategist, rather than simply setting off together to confront another adversary.
This is Li’s first television series. She comes from the Zhejiang Xiaobaihua Yue opera troupe, where she performs female roles; Zheng also has a theatrical background, having studied Peking opera. Their stage experience serves two different characters here: an energetic young leader and a man who favours cunning over force. At the production launch in Hengdian, the creators described the series as a costume comedy about everyday life with an adventure plot. The wrap announcement does not yet give a release date: audiences still have the finished, edited version of this story to look forward to.
