TVB and Tencent plan short dramas with different episode lengths for mainland China and Hong Kong
Hong Kong broadcaster TVB and Chinese streaming platform Tencent Video have agreed to produce short dramas together. Their November 6 announcement covers adaptations of classic TVB properties alongside the development of original stories. The first remakes, casts and release dates have not yet been announced.
The agreement’s central feature is that the same material will be released in two formats. Mainland audiences will receive 15-minute horizontal episodes on Tencent Video. In Hong Kong, the stories will air in hour-long episodes during prime time on TVB Jade. The short format therefore applies primarily to the online version, while the familiar television schedule is retained.
For viewers, this means that episode counts and viewing rhythms may differ by outlet. The companies have not specified whether individual scenes will be edited differently or whether either version will contain additional material. The promise of two presentation formats should not yet be read as an announcement of two separate series with different plots.
TVB hopes to introduce stories accumulated over decades to younger audiences. Tencent contributes access to its platform and mainland promotional channels. The partners describe the collaboration as a way to extend the life of familiar television properties and combine Hong Kong production experience with online distribution. These are stated ambitions, not results already achieved.
For TVB, the approach preserves a place for both broadcast television and shorter online viewing. If the model takes hold, one production could serve two sets of viewing habits. Assessing the quality of the new versions and their treatment of the classics will have to wait for specific projects: the current announcement explains the partnership’s structure rather than presenting a finished premiere slate.
