At the premiere of Spare Queens, Stephy Tang Lai-Yan described the work behind her confident delivery on screen. She and Chrissie Chau Sau-Na trained for months, but in practice their bowling balls kept landing in the gutter. Tang said they were a long way from the standard of Hong Kong’s team.
Tang was happy to play a mother because in this screen family the daughter looks after her character. Playing her younger self meant shooting a love scene in a car with Adam Pak Tin-Nam. Pak admitted he had trouble picturing how they would fit. Tang said they talked it through beforehand and shot the scene quickly.
Chrissie Chau was Anson Kong Ip-Sang’s first on-screen kiss in a film. The director let them shoot several other scenes first so they could get comfortable working together.
