Hong Kong crime thriller Mastermind opens in Taiwan on November 20. In release publicity published on November 2, Louis Koo Tin-Lok described a scene in which he had to fight six or seven opponents at once in heavy rain. He compared the experience to mud wrestling.
The film was written and directed by James Hung Ling-Ching. Koo plays a police officer investigating a case involving two locked rooms: a suspect disappears from a cell and is later found dead in the police headquarters archive. The bullet came from the investigator’s own service weapon, leaving him to solve the crime and prove his innocence.
His partner is played by Ci Sha, whose apparent loyalty is undermined by behaviour that casts doubt on his intentions. Simon Yam Tat-Wah plays a senior inspector, while Tse Kwan-Ho plays an intelligence officer. All become entangled in the mysterious killing.
Koo had already spoken about shooting in the downpour in June 2024, while the film was in production. He explained then that the story unfolds over a few hours on a stormy night, and that being constantly soaked was cold even on summer nights. The current announcement revisits that detail ahead of the film’s Taiwan release, with its investigation accompanied by gunfights and chases.
