In August 1937, the Japanese invaders occupied Shanghai. Facing a national crisis, the three great tycoons of Shanghai — also its three biggest underworld bosses — each had their own plans: Huang Jin-Rong pleaded illness and shut his doors to visitors; Zhang Xiao-Lin (Wong Ming-San) became a traitor who profited from the nation's misfortune; and Zhang Xiao-Lin's sworn brother, the most influential of them all, Du Yue-Sheng (Du Yu-Ming), left for Hong Kong. The puppet secret agent headquarters supported by the Japanese was located at 76 Jessfield Road, and many Chinese compatriots met a tragic death here at the hands of its chief Wu Si-Bao (Wang Zheng-Jun), who ran rampant and lawlessly styled himself the "little Du Yue-Sheng." Patriotic fighters, enraged by the atrocities of the Japanese and the traitors who served as their accomplices, formed an assassination squad and killed one after another the head of the puppet "Citizens' Association" You Ju-Sun, the secretary-general of the puppet "Shanghai Municipal Supervision Office" Ren Bao-An, and others. One of the squad's key men, Du Yue-Sheng's disciple Lin Huai-Bu (Chui Siu-Kin), was wounded during an assassination attempt and fled to a fruit shop. The shop's owner, Wang Guo-Sheng, turned out to be an old friend of Du Yue-Sheng. While recovering from his wounds, Lin Huai-Bu and the owner's daughter Yue-Ying (Suen Yee-Man) gradually fell in love.
When the assassination squad moved against Zhang Xiao-Lin, they suffered heavy casualties. Lin Huai-Bu barely escaped with his life, but the squad did not stop its operations. Soon afterward, Yue-Ying, using her school ties with Wu Si-Bao's wife She Ai-Zhen, infiltrated "No. 76," and Lin Huai-Bu, with Wang Guo-Sheng's help and Du Yue-Sheng's connections, became one of Zhang Xiao-Lin's bodyguards. Later, with the aid of She Ai-Zhen's bodyguard, the highly skilled martial artist "Little Knife" Yang Fan (Dung Chi-Wa), who was in love with Yue-Ying, Lin Huai-Bu successfully carried out the assassination of Zhang Xiao-Lin, but unfortunately fell into the hands of Wu Si-Bao.

В остальном - весьма неплохой кунг-фу-боевик. Фильм слегка затянут вначале, но ко второй половине начинает давать жару, и появляются действительно интересные и разнообразные схватки. Они не так длинны, как хотелось бы, но драйв и изобретательность в них присутствуют - а что еще надо любителям жанра?
Есть некоторая скомканность повествования, словно какие-то куски были выброшены при монтаже. Есть определенная сумбурность отдельных сюжетных линий. Есть несколько костяных персонажей, без которых можно было легко обойтись. Но при всем при этом "Великий Шанхай" смотриться легко, а, учитывая явно скромный бюджет, еще и вполне качественно для недорогого фильма.
