Emperor Wen-Zong of Tang indulged in song and dance, neglecting state affairs, and issued an edict to select concubines. The talented scholar Liang Hou-Ben was chatting with friends in a tavern and, drunk, wrote a seditious poem, which he dropped on the ground and which was picked up by the pipa player Run-Niang. Hou-Ben asked the Zheng family pharmacy to treat his cousin's illness and met Zheng Ying-Ying, who was just then learning the art of qin and se from Run-Niang. Hou-Ben loved music, and the two grew fond of each other and pledged to marry. Show more Hou-Ben spent a fortune to buy the national musical treasure, the xiaohulei, intending it as a betrothal gift, but the eunuch Qiu Shi-Liang caught sight of it and seized it, leaving Hou-Ben no choice but to flee. The dissolute Zheng Zhu reported Ying-Ying's name to the authorities, and his mother drove him from the house. Under Run-Niang's guidance, Hou-Ben and Ying-Ying hastily held their wedding ceremony. The authorities seized Ying-Ying and the xiaohulei and took them deep into the palace, and searched everywhere for Hou-Ben; Run-Niang tricked the city gate officer into letting Hou-Ben out of the city. Ying-Ying angrily denounced the foolish emperor and was imprisoned in Shangyang Palace. Hou-Ben and his cousin entered the forbidden area by night, just as Wen-Zong was forcing himself on Ying-Ying, but she vowed to die rather than submit and struck the foolish emperor with the xiaohulei. Wen-Zong flew into a rage and granted her death by white silk. The palace maids found that Ying-Ying was still breathing and placed her and the xiaohulei in a chest, which floated out of the palace along the imperial canal and was caught by Hou-Ben. Zheng Zhu led soldiers and officers in pursuit but was beaten back by Hou-Ben and his brother, and Zheng Zhu drowned in the water. Hou-Ben, Ying-Ying, and their companions went to join the anti-Tang rebel army of Wang Xian-Zhi.
