Description:
The story unfolds between 1938 and 1944, as Japan invades China and the nation is torn apart. Under the leadership and encouragement of the Communist Party of China, a great many patriotic and progressive cultural figures — among them Guo Mo-Ruo, Xia Yan, Tian Han, Ba Jin, Liu Ya-Zi, Tao Xing-Zhi, Xu Bei-Hong, Mao Dun and Ouyang Yu-Qian — gather in Guilin. Together with the Guilin office of the Eighth Route Army, represented by Li Ke-Nong, they take up the pen as a weapon amid the region's breathtaking scenery and turn the stage into a battlefield. Show more Through a series of cultural movements in the press, literature, drama, music and fine art, they promote the anti-Japanese national united front, transforming exile and revival, hardship and duty, life and death, personal feeling and national sentiment into a Great Wall of national culture against foreign aggression — waging a "cultural war of resistance" fought without gunsmoke.
