Description:
Jining in Shandong: to the south lies Weishan, to the east Qufu, and the Grand Canal runs straight through the city. Blessed with convenient transport and steeped in the spirit of Confucius and Mencius, it has since ancient times gathered officials and merchants, scholars and men of letters. A famed river-and-land port of the north, it bears the honored name "Capital of the Grand Canal."
The story begins in the early years of the Republic of China and spans nearly thirty years of tumultuous historical change. Show more At its heart are the upright official Huang Zi-Rong, the chivalrous and passionate Cloud, the honest merchant Song Lu-Sheng, the teacher and chronicler Yang Chun-Zao, and others.
