Before long, though, the area is caught up in old-city redevelopment, the couple is allocated an apartment, and under city regulations residents' quarters strictly forbid keeping large, fierce dogs. They have barely moved into their new home with Benertou when trouble arrives one thing after another: first the neighbors report them, then the residents' committee comes to work on them, and finally even the police station shows up, giving them a deadline to send the dog away. Show more The couple plans to board Benertou temporarily with relatives and friends, but the dog goes on a hunger strike at other people's homes, and a helpless Hou Dong brings Benertou back home again. With the deadline approaching, Hou Dong takes Benertou out into the wild again and again to set it free, but again and again it returns to its owners. When Benertou finally understands that its masters mean to abandon it, it chooses to say farewell for good.
