Zhu Zhu, fresh out of police academy, is assigned to a local precinct as a community officer. To welcome the Olympics, the whole precinct throws itself into learning English, and on the precinct chief's recommendation Zhu Zhu, who has some English under her belt, becomes everyone's teacher. For Zhu Zhu this is no small task, and she takes it terribly seriously; the whole precinct responds with enthusiasm — only the old officer known as Boss Ma, Ma Wu-Qing, seems not to care at all, forever finding excuses to skip class: either he's too old to learn, or he has to go help someone on the street fix a car or a gas stove. Show more In Zhu Zhu's eyes, Boss Ma is a petty old man with no ambition and nothing to show for himself, just drifting through his days. Ma pays no mind to her jibes and keeps smiling as he goes about his inconspicuous little errands for the neighbors.
Xuanyijiayuan sits within the jurisdiction of Ma's precinct, and Wang Yuan lives in this compound. He may only be a schoolboy, but he is famous far and wide around here — for his mischief, and for the fluent English he speaks under the influence of his English-teacher father. Today the naughty Wang Yuan has angered his mother again. In a fit of temper she does as usual and takes him to the precinct, handing him over to Boss Ma to be "disciplined."
Toward evening Zhu Zhu walks Wang Yuan home, only to find that two robbers have slipped into his apartment: that day they robbed a car dealership and shot dead a security guard, then fled the police manhunt into Wang Yuan's home. Caught off guard, Zhu Zhu and the whole Wang family are tied up in the apartment.
When Zhu Zhu fails to return for a long time, Boss Ma hurries to Wang Yuan's home and quickly senses something is wrong. Posing as a gas repairman, he fools the two smug robbers and gets inside. At the critical moment Ma exploits the robbers' ignorance of English, discussing a plan with Zhu Zhu and Wang Yuan in English, and cleverly alerts the police who are hunting the robbers nearby. The robbers, losing their heads, fire in a panic, and Ma is gravely wounded shielding Wang Yuan. Only then does Zhu Zhu learn that Ma's English is second to none — and what surprises her even more is that this very Ma is the hero "Ma One-Eye" her teachers at the academy so often spoke of.
