Description:
Zheng Banqiao — a xiucai under Kangxi, a juren under Yongzheng, a jinshi under Qianlong — sat the imperial examinations through three reigns, passed the age of fifty, and waited years for an official post before finally being granted a lowly seventh-rank magistracy. What a hard road it was, what a hard road! Carrying his ambition to set the world right and bring succor to the people, he took up his post incognito. Along the way, a folk ballad made him realize that Fan County was no easy place to be an official, and Fan County's affairs no easy matter to handle. Show more For there, "five ghosts of the living world make mischief for the judge of the underworld," and the last several magistrates had either "landed in jail or lost their posts." Sure enough, to give the "new lord" a show of strength, the five great gentry families of Fan County sent an eight-man, four-bearer sedan chair that rattled old Zheng until his bones came apart and stars burst before his eyes. Old Zheng knew there was something behind it. "Well, well — they dare to dig up the ground on the head of Tai Sui!" He turned their trick to his own account: a sedan chair full of sun-dried mud bricks not only bent the bearers' backs but crushed the gentry's feet. "Zheng Xie quells the evil" — the name of the eccentric magistrate spread far and wide.
The couplets Old Zheng wrote in his own hand went up: "The yamen gates of Fan County stand wide open; let those with money but no justice stay out." The notice Old Zheng wrote in his own hand went up: "This county will hear cases of injustice at once — be it dawn, noon, or the middle of the night. Fear not that the accused has connections to the highest heavens; old Zheng will judge according to justice." Ho! A hole was knocked through the wall of the county yamen compound — what was that for?
