The story takes place somewhere in Shanxi. Xiao Bing-He (Ge Zhi-Jun), the director of a thriving agricultural cooperative, wants to throw a lavish wedding for his son Xiao Yuan-Fang (Wang Ye), because his son is marrying a city girl, Feng Meng-Yan (Sun Lin), and he is determined to show the city folk just how well-off farmers live these days. Yuan-Fang's mother-in-law-to-be, Feng Huan-Zhen (Ding Jia-Li), however, refuses to let her daughter hold the wedding in the countryside and insists it must be held in the city. The two families clash fiercely over the matter, while Yuan-Fang is caught in the middle like a mouse in a bellows, suffering blows from both sides. Yuan-Fang lost his mother at an early age and grew up surrounded by the care of his fellow villagers. Xiao Bing-He had hoped to use his son's wedding to thank all his neighbors, but instead he has run into this utterly inflexible in-law. Feng Huan-Zhen was abandoned by her husband years ago and single-handedly raised her daughter through great hardship. She had hoped to use her daughter's wedding to put her ex-husband to shame, but instead she has run into this equally stubborn in-law.
