Description:
Adapted from Zhao He-Qi's novel "Records of Gratitude and Grudges on Mount Tai." At night, Mount Tai lies still. On the mountain, a church looms faintly in the darkness. Tie-Shou Zhang of the Jisheng Tang pharmacy and his apprentice Gen Sheng secretly slip into the church under cover of night and rescue a merchant captured by foreigners during the day. The foreigners discover this and give chase. At the critical moment, Tie-Shou Zhang's adopted son Bai Lang gallops up and, firing two guns, drives the foreigners back. Tie-Shou Zhang brings the merchant to the Jisheng Tang in Tai'an and personally sets his bones and treats his wounds. The man claims to be from Cangzhou in Hebei, named Dongye Zhi-Xiong, and says he ran into deadly trouble for no reason while touring Mount Tai. Learning that he is the grandson of Dongye Zheng-Dao, Tie-Shou Zhang is overjoyed. More than thirty years earlier, Dongye Zheng-Dao had taken in the homeless Tie-Shou Zhang, raised him, and taught him martial arts, medicine, and how to conduct himself. After his master died under the guns of the Eight-Nation Alliance, Tie-Shou Zhang had been searching for his descendants. The church steward Yan Xi-Biao learns that Dongye was rescued by Tie-Shou Zhang and wants to seize him back, but the priest stops him. The priest comes alone to Tie-Shou Zhang and tells him that the man he saved is a Japanese spy holding important political and military intelligence, and asks him to hand the man over. Tie-Shou Zhang angrily denounces the priest's words as nonsense and drives him away. That night, Yan Xi-Biao brings men to the Jisheng Tang but is beaten off by the prepared Tie-Shou Zhang. Marymay sends men posing as Bai Lang's subordinates to intercept Dongye. Bai Lang arrives with his men, storms the church, and rescues Dongye again. To be safe, Tie-Shou Zhang sends Bai Lang to escort Dongye to Tianjin in person. Soon after the July 7 Incident, Tai'an falls. In front of the church, Japanese commander Major Kawamura orders machine guns to mow down more than two hundred believers taking refuge there; the priest and Marymay are killed as well. One day, Bai Lang brings Kawamura to visit Tie-Shou Zhang. Gazing at the "Dongye" before him, Tie-Shou Zhang is stunned: he never imagined that the man he saved was a demon slaughtering Chinese! And his adopted son has become a traitor serving the enemy. Furious, he kicks over the gifts Kawamura brought and drives them from his home. Later, Bai Lang shamelessly betrays Xue-Lan and Gen Sheng, who are preparing to go to Mount Tai to join the Communists, causing Gen Sheng to be shot dead. In a rage, Tie-Shou Zhang kills Bai Lang with his own hands, then joins his daughter Xue-Lan in infiltrating the Japanese headquarters and shooting Kawamura, whose hands are stained with the blood of the Chinese people. But Tie-Shou Zhang is also hit by several bullets. With the joy of revenge, he closes his eyes. As the sun rises, Xue-Lan, carrying her father's steel saber on her back, runs toward Mount Tai.
