Description:
After a failed spinal surgery, "moon singer" Li Pei-Jing was paralyzed for 40 years. She told Tsai Ming-Liang: "Film my daily rehabilitation. My lower body has been paralyzed since I was 23, and only in the past two years has it finally regained sensation — it hurts now." Li Pei-Jing rose to fame with the song "I Love the Moon," and for these forty years, what accompanied her was rehabilitation day after day. Chang Feng is about to turn one hundred, and he has walked the actor's path for half a century. Show more Tsai Ming-Liang sees him as a tree, saying he "grows more beautiful and more free-spirited with age." The camera watches Chang Feng walk past abandoned buildings and corridors, while the banyan trees have long been waiting outside. The old tree that bears the name of evergreen and the old man — one still, one moving — undergo a deliberate yet coincidental, profound exchange of gazes, and their images gradually overlap.
Actress Yang Kuei-Mei invited Tsai Ming-Liang to create a charity short film, turning the camera toward two figures marked by the traces of time. What becomes of the dazzling starlight that once shone on stage and screen after time has refined it and brought it back to life itself? In these seemingly inactive, restrained images, there is in fact a gaze fixed upon life.
