From childhood, Yan Zhen-Qing received an excellent education. Gifted by nature and endowed with outstanding talent, he passed the imperial examination for the jinshi degree in his youth, yet because of the family precept "pursue learning, not office," he did not attend Emperor Xuan-Zong's Qujiang banquet and never entered officialdom. Later, having witnessed with his own eyes the chaos of the bureaucracy and the suffering of the common people, he gradually came to understand that "for every honest official in the world, there is one less corrupt one," and resolved to serve as an official for the people, bringing benefit to the people of his region. Show more He knew full well how perilous the path of office was and how bottomless the sea of bureaucracy, yet he laid down his mighty brush and boldly stepped into the intricate and treacherous imperial court, over which storm clouds were gathering. To fulfill her son's aspiration to serve the country while also honoring the ancestral precept, Yan's mother resolutely took his guilt upon herself and took her own life to atone before the ancestors.
Undaunted by the powerful and upright by nature, he openly denounced the treacherous chancellor Yang Guo-Zhong and was demoted to the post of governor of Pingyuan Commandery. Governing his region with dedication, he brought order and prosperity to Pingyuan, which had suffered years of famine, so that the people lived in peace and contentment. In the fourteenth year of the Tianbao era, An Lu-Shan, military commissioner of the three garrisons of Pinglu, Fanyang, and Hedong, launched the An Lushan Rebellion that shook the very foundations of the Tang Empire. Yan Zhen-Qing contacted his cousin Yan Gao-Qing, led the forces of several commanderies, and successfully resisted An Lu-Shan's two hundred thousand iron cavalry of Yanbei, effectively checking the expansion of the rebel forces and creating a favorable opportunity for the Tang army to quell the rebellion. Yan Gao-Qing, along with more than thirty loyal and devoted members of his household, gave their lives heroically for their country. During the reign of Emperor De-Zong, Li Xi-Lie, military commissioner of Huaixi, rose in rebellion, and Yan Zhen-Qing, envied by the treacherous chancellor Lu Qi, was sent to Li Xi-Lie's den of tigers and wolves to persuade him to submit. With righteous dignity and looking upon death as a return home, he was ultimately killed by Li Xi-Lie. Yet Li Xi-Lie's subordinate Chen Xian-Qi, inspired by his example, poisoned Li Xi-Lie, led his men to rise up and return to the Tang, and the rebellion was quelled. Only then could Yan Zhen-Qing's coffin be escorted back to the capital. Emperor De-Zong, in deep grief, issued an edict suspending court audiences for five days, and the whole nation mourned. His moral integrity and achievements are admired by later generations and will be remembered through the ages!
