Description:
A murder rocks the great Tang capital of Chang'an: Sa Luo, envoy of the Arab kingdom of Dashi, is killed in a brothel, and the scene is left in utter chaos.
Di Ren-Jie and Hong Yun are ordered to investigate, but they fall into an ambush set by the true killers. Hong Yun, a close friend, dies at the hands of a Tiele man named Tian Sha, and the pupa of the queen of the Huan Nie demon moth, a tribute offering, is seized by Tian Sha as well. For his failure in the case, Di Ren-Jie is stripped of his post and put on trial by Wu Ze-Tian. Show more
Several years pass. Wu Ze-Tian, having just proclaimed herself empress, is struck overnight by a strange poison of madness. Suspecting poisoning, she orders Yuan Feng, commander of the Golden Guards, to summon Di Ren-Jie back to the capital for a secret investigation.
By now Di Ren-Jie has become a farmer, spending his days with his pregnant wife, never imagining that Yuan Feng's arrival will shatter the calm of his life.
Faced with Yuan Feng's pleas, Di Ren-Jie, who has seen through the ups and downs of officialdom, flatly refuses. But his wife persuades him: for the peace of the realm and the good of all people, Di Ren-Jie, after much hesitation, bids her farewell and secretly returns to the capital with Yuan Feng.
In Wu Ze-Tian's chambers, the once mighty sovereign lies withered, her life flickering like a candle in the wind. As Di Ren-Jie is overcome with emotion, Yuan Feng is suddenly poisoned, flies into a frenzy, and attacks him.
After subduing Yuan Feng, Di Ren-Jie catches a suspicious moth at the scene and, together with Yuan Feng, takes it back to the laboratory in his old home. Testing it with a solution, they discover that the moth is a Huan Nie demon moth from Dashi — the very tribute once stolen by Tian Sha and his Tiele companions. Its powder is extremely poisonous, able to drive people into hallucinations and madness unto death. But because it is not a fully formed Huan Nie demon moth, its toxicity is weak and can only kill its target through gradual accumulation.
Just as the two discuss their next move, Tian Sha and his men launch a surprise attack to silence them. But faced with Di Ren-Jie and Yuan Feng, they flee in disgrace.
To cure Wu Ze-Tian, Di Ren-Jie takes Yuan Feng through a tunnel beneath the mass grave to the city of Jiuyou, seeking Fei Yu, the sister of Hong Yun, who is skilled in the way of insects.
Fei Yu, an expert in insect lore, helps the two brew an antidote to the demon moth from the Huan Nie insect king. Meanwhile, Tian Sha and his men attack; the three kill Tian Sha, escape to safety, and successfully bring the antidote back to the palace, where they administer it to Wu Ze-Tian.
Yet all of this is in fact a bitter ruse staged by Wu Ze-Tian herself.
It turns out she conspired with Nuo Yi-De, leader of the Tiele, ordering Yuan Feng to lure Di Ren-Jie into seeking out Fei Yu, so that she might swoop in from behind and obtain the world's only Huan Nie insect king, to create a true, fully formed Huan Nie demon moth and poison the Li clan, thereby securing her throne.
Di Ren-Jie and Fei Yu are thrown into prison on charges of treason.
Upon learning the truth, Yuan Feng turns to the side of good and frees Di Ren-Jie and Fei Yu.
Following the carbon powder on Yuan Feng's soles, the three find the Tiele lair in an abandoned blacksmith's shop in Luoyang, but arrive one step too late: Nuo Yi-De and his men have already infiltrated Wu Ze-Tian's birthday celebration.
From the ambushed Tian Sha they learn that Nuo Yi-De has no intention of obeying Wu Ze-Tian; he plans to betray her, slaughter all the Tang imperial clan and high ministers, and, coordinating from within and without, seize the Central Plains for himself.
After dealing with Tian Sha, Di Ren-Jie and his companions disguise themselves as envoys from Tianzhu and infiltrate the celebration. Joining forces, they successfully stop the spread of the Huan Nie demon moth and thwart Nuo Yi-De's scheme.
After this, Wu Ze-Tian realizes that family bonds matter more than the dragon throne. She abandons her plans against the Li clan and, after hesitation, lets the loyal and patriotic Di Ren-Jie go.
And so Di Ren-Jie and Fei Yu bid farewell to Yuan Feng and set out on the road home.
